In case you were wondering what we are up to, some bothersome bugs appeared not to have been squashed properly and we are doing so with extreme prejudice.

It's not build on Smod, just the dream version of Substance we wished we have in 2006. Everything has been retuned, but most importantly, the map pack offers some much-needed variety (a sore point in the original). Pepsifan04 is helping me a big deal with this, so in the very least we'll have some of Smod's talent that way!

Sure: you can change the autoexec, and the config files that are run whenever you switch suit mode.

Top men are working on the hand models, to make it so that Gordon alone uses the HEV gloves, while everyone else uses the CSS hands. That eye sore had to be fixed, after a decade and after being entrusted with the other mods for the map pack.

Speaking of which, Penetration remains the only one mod whose creator I have been unable to get in contact with. I am positive that something might have happened to the man, 2 years ago. The rest of the featured mods, all answered back. I had considered more mods for the map pack, but not all were compatible with Substance's gameplay (like Ravenholm and Forward Motion) and some big ones never answered back (Minerva, Combine Destiny).

I'm looking for an alternative for those who can't install Smod Standalone. So far, I've been able to repack the mod into a Sourcemods folder, and make it run with steam by changing the steamappid to 215.

But that's not enough: I need to use the hl2.exe from Smod Standalone, and not the one from Souce SDK Base (215) which crashes often. I guess that's the hl2.exe we were using back in 2006, right? Is there a way to force it to be used, other than copypasting the file into Source SDK Base?

Standalone is using hl2.exe orangebox version, but that's not the point:
You CAN'T redistribute any unmodified source and steam files, the reason why standalone uses installer is to make it unusable if the player does not own hl2, and all it does is extract needed files from source sdk and applies a little patch to make everything work like in the "  'ye olde times   ".
There's no way of automating the whole process and make it flawless for every user. see here: http://bsnooch.com/forums/index.php?topic=1360.msg8292#msg8292

I think no amount of disclaimers would save you from a C&D letter, if someone up high notices that Standalone includes a Steam emulator. :) I prefer to answer a lawyer about including some outdated files, than the fact that my mod makes Half-Life 2 run without Steam.

So yeah, back off a little bit because imagine my face when I realized the real reason why distributing the full Smod Standalone is warez. Never heard of a full legit mod that does that. ;D

Too bad it isn't warez by that definition then. All standalone does is extract files from the VPKs of the games needed to run SMOD. You can only get these files if you have them installed, which in turn need their own licenses to own.

Now, if you get into the illegal distribution of said items (i.e. a ready to execute package of said files), that goes against standalones original intention, which is requiring the original games and then extracting the files.

Emulators aren't considered illegal in any way, since everyone is free to code whatever they want and share it with anyone. It just gets hairy when you include someone else's (in this case VALVe's) original contents, but since Steam is free anyway they wouldn't give a single fart about it.

That's what I've said, and why I'm still here and not in jail (or smth).
I'm just making the framework for the mods to work, but to make them work you'll also need to own games, that were required to make them run in the first place.
Look, standalone is a merely 4 files (five, if you want to count in the fixed vpk extractor) that's all I'm responsible for with standalone.
The rest of files are already on the user PC (What Freekill said).
I'm gonna keep this ?question? open so maybe someone will figure out a better way of working with standalone framework.
