Underhell Chapter 1 is coming out very soon! Check out the teaser trailer:

Underhell Chapter 1

Edit for front page:

Release date - Sept. 1, 2013

For those of you who don't know, this project was started began on the SMOD engine by forum member mxthe (SMOD: Troopers creator). He has since expanded it into a full blown mod and moved away from the SMOD engine. However he has said that Underhell will be customizable to some extent, although not exactly like SMOD.

Project Goldenarms announced

I am working on a new project to totally redo the HL2 campaign for SMOD. Please check it out. I'm hoping for this to be like nothing anyone has seen before in SMOD. The initial idea for the project is to make it as modular as possible so that players and developers can drop it into their own SMOD version with little or no fuss and play. However, I may be collaborating with several others so there is no telling what the project might wind up looking like.

For now here are the planned features:

Code: [Select]
-    Re-imagined mapadds for the HL2 campaign. These are being made from scratch.
-    Mapadds built with Mapadd Pseudo-Randomization. 100's of events chosen at random. True re-playability.
-    Custom voice overs. Don't expect anything amazing (SMOD is limited in this area) but the template will be there for others to expand upon.
-    Objective system, for mission based gameplay integrated into the campaign.
-    New factions and new characters (maybe)
-    Minibosses :O
-    More to come...

If you want more info, head over to the PG forum where I will try to keep things active. Finally check out my first little piece of media from the project...

Hey folks, just a little news update, sorry things have been kinda quiet around here...

Valve Unleashes Hurricane SteamPipe

Yes, yes, it has finally happened. Valve has gone and added Half Life 2 to the growing list of source games converted to SteamPipe. An unfortunate side effect of this is that it totally kills SMOD and many other mods made on the old SDK. While this isn't the first setback to SMOD recently (including the_author disappearing around the time of the Fukushima earthquake and the Valve May 2010 update to Half Life 2) this is certain to make SMOD even less accessable to new players.

Luckily we had plenty of advanced warning about this update and if you backed up the old HL2 .gcf files you should be good. Wait, whats that, you forgot to back up the files? Well, never fear, our crew was on the case was on the case from the start and OneManShow has compiled a guide on how to get SMOD back working and future proof your other games including CS:S, HL2DM, and others.

Please check out the SteamPipe Fix thread for more information.

SirMasters Makes His SMOD Re-make Official

Lets move on to some good news, forum member sirmasters has made it official that he is working on re-creating many of the features of SMOD on the latest Source SDK! The mod is currently in development and he now his his own forum on our website where you can download the latest version, get info, and even download the source code!

He first made a mention of this project back in December of 2012, when he released a bullet-time video demo. Since then things had been relatively quiet but now there is a new build online for you to check out and some progress updates.

Quote
    Make Custom Weapon (25%)
    Make Custom NPCS
    Make Mapadd (0.0001%)
    Make Custom Explosives
    Add Proper leaning
    Figure out how to make RO style aim mode
    Add documentation for everyone (-1%)

Remember when several thousand websites (including ours!) went dark in protest of the US internet regulation bills SOPA and PIPA? Well the Gov't is already moving again to regulate the internet and keep it 'safe' from 'cyber-threats' with the new CISPA regulation.

Here is the problem:

* It lets the government spy on you without a warrant. (read more)
* It makes it so you canít even find out about it after the fact. (read more)
* It makes it so companies canít be sued when they do illegal things with your data. (read more)
* It allows corporations to cyber-attack each other and individuals outside of the law. (read more)
* It makes every privacy policy on the web a moot point, and violates the 4th amendment. (read more)

Here is a quick video about the legislation that should be on the docket THIS MONTH:

Even worse than SOPA: CISPA cybersecurity bill will censor the Web. FREEDOM Coming to an END?

Here is a video of one of the idiot congressmen admitting this bill helps CEOs and hurts the average person:

UPDATE 7/25/13: SteamPipe Fox :}

Pepsifan04 has released a fix that works with the .vpk files -- http://bsnooch.com/forums/index.php?topic=1088.0

-- ORIGINAL POST --

Well this kinda sucks. :-\

Valve has been planning to convert several games to use .VPK files instead of .GCF This update has since launched.

I am bringing this to attention because SMOD will not be able to mount the new VPK files, and according to reports will make SMOD crash out with a MountFileSystem error should you have CSS or HL2DM mounted in addcontents.txt. Steam will most likely not download the GCF files again should you reinstall these games after this update.

The only games affected that are relevant to SMOD (so far) are Counter Strike: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Valve has also updated Half-Life 2 and its Episodes with this as of 6/29/13.

Therefore, I advise all of you to backup the following GCF's in steam/steamapps to disks or flash drives before going through with the steampipe conversion:

Code: [Select]
counter-strike source binaries.gcf
counter-strike source client.gcf
counter-strike source shared.gcf
episode 1 shared.gcf
half-life 2 content.gcf
half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf
half-life 2 episode one.gcf
half-life 2 game dialog.gcf
lostcoast content.gcf
source dedicated server.gcf
source engine.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
sourceinit.gcf

There might be a few unneeded .GCF's in that list, but I'm not taking chances in excluding a critical file. It is important you back these up before running CS:S or HL2:DM as Steam will convert these to .VPK and delete the GCF's from your hard drive. However, should you no longer have some of these .GCF files, the ones from the .VPK's are still compatible in most cases. Read on for details.

Fortunately, SMOD thought forward enough that you can get around this issue and still mount content from these games...provide you have spare HDD space and don't mind a little manual work. The following fixes allow you to mount content from any affected games with no issues. Even better, future Steam updates will not affect these folders, effectively future-proofing SMOD from any other updates that could break compatibility.

TUTORIALS

HOW TO FIX HALF-LIFE 2: DEATHMATCH:

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf to its own, respective folder somewhere. For the sake of this, it'll be C:\SMOD_Games\HL2DM

2: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for these lines:
Code: [Select]
"HL2MP" {
"path" "hl2mp"
"id" "320"
}

3: Replace the "path" and "id" parts so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"HL2MP" {
                        "path" "c:\SMOD_Games\HL2DM\hl2mp\"
}

HOW TO FIX HALF-LIFE 2: DEATHMATCH (SteamPipe Version):

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of hl2mp_pak_dir.vpk in the steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\hl2mp\ folder to its own, respective folders somewhere. For the sake of this, it'll be  C:\SMOD_Games\HL2DM_SteamPipe

2: Copy the "maps" folder from steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\hl2mp\ into C:\SMOD_Games\HL2DM_SteamPipe or equivalent folder.

3: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for these lines:
Code: [Select]
"HL2MP" {
"path" "hl2mp"
"id" "320"
}

4: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"HL2MP" {
                        "path" "c:\SMOD_Games\HL2DM_SteamPipe\"
}

HOW TO FIX COUNTER STRIKE: SOURCE:

SPECIAL NOTE: A few maps were updated during the Orange Box update that will not run under SMOD's Source 2006 engine. A fix for these maps can be downloaded here. Extract or copy the maps into your SMOD install instead of the CSS SCIFI folder.

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of counter-strike source shared.gcf to its own, respective folders somewhere. For the sake of this, it'll be C:\SMOD_Games\CSS.

2: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for these lines:
Code: [Select]
"CS:S" {
"path" "cstrike"
"id" "240"
}

3: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"CS:S" {
                        "path" "c:\SMOD_Games\CSS\cstrike\"
}

HOW TO FIX COUNTER STRIKE: SOURCE (SteamPipe Version):

SPECIAL NOTE: A few maps were updated during the Orange Box update that will not run under SMOD's Source 2006 engine. A fix for these maps can be downloaded here. Extract or copy the maps into your SMOD install instead of the CSS SCIFI folder.

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of cstrike_pak_dir.vpk in the steamapps\common\counter-strike source\cstrike\ folder to its own, respective folders somewhere. For the sake of this, it'll be  C:\SMOD_Games\CSS_SteamPipe

2: Copy the "maps" folder from steamapps\common\counter-strike source\cstrike\ into C:\SMOD_Games\CSS_SteamPipe or equivalent folder.

3: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for these lines:
Code: [Select]
"CS:S" {
"path" "css"
"id" "240"
}

4: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"CS:S" {
                        "path" "c:\SMOD_Games\CSS_SteamPipe\"
}

FUTURE-PROOFING HALF-LIFE 2:

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of the following .GCF's to their own, respective folder. For the sake of this, it'll be C:\SMOD_Games\HL2
Code: [Select]
source engine.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
half-life 2 content.gcf
half-life 2 game dialog.gcf

2: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for this:
Code: [Select]
"HL2" {
"path" "hl2"
"id" "220"
}

3: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"HL2" {
                        "path" "C:\SMOD_Games\HL2\hl2\"
}

HOW TO FIX HALF-LIFE 2 (SteamPipe Version):

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of hl2_pak_dir.vpk, hl2_misc_dir.vpk, hl2_sound_misc_dir.vpk, hl2_sound_vo_english_dir.vpk, and hl2_textures_dir.vpk, in the steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\ folder to their own, respective folder somewhere. For the sake of this, it'll be  C:\SMOD_Games\HL2_SteamPipe

2: Copy the "maps" folder from steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\ into C:\SMOD_Games\HL2_SteamPipe or equivalent folder.

3: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for these lines:
Code: [Select]
"HL2" {
"path" "hl2"
"id" "220"
}

4: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this:
Code: [Select]
"HL2" {
                        "path" "c:\SMOD_Games\HL2_SteamPipe\"
}

FUTURE-PROOFING HALF-LIFE 2 - EPISODE 1:

1: Use GCFScape to extract the contents of the following .GCF's to their own, respective folder. For the sake of this, it'll be C:\SMOD_Games\EP1
Code: [Select]
half-life 2 episode one.gcf
episode 1 shared.gcf

That's all you really need to do for now as no mod currently uses content from Episode 1. This is only here in case future mods use it. Should one be released, you can perform the other steps:

2: Open your SMOD's addcontents.txt file in its scripts folder. Look for this first, if a section like this isn't in the file, skip this step:
Code: [Select]
"EP1" {
"path" "episodic"
"id" "380"
}

3: Replace the "path" and "id" parts of both so they look like this, or if EP1 had no line in addcontents, add this:
Code: [Select]
"EP1" {
                        "path" "C:\SMOD_Games\EP1\episodic\"
}
