I've done some quick testing myself to duplicate youreviltwin's issue and haven't been able to do so. I'm using a Windows 7 machine, so could this be related to the operating system? I would not be surprised if recent updates to Windows 10 might be the cause of such a specific issue.

So it doesn't appear to be a flaw with Smod Standalone. It seems to be an issue with SMOD itself, or maybe an issue with running the old version of Half-Life 2 / the SDK?
That was the first thing I've tested, unfortunately (i think?) I'm unable to replicate the issue.
I've tested with current hl2 exe (default for standalone) and with source sdk 2006 exe, both return the same results.
Tested on Smod40aq, Crylife 2, Crylife 1.5.8, Smod:Redux, Smod: Tactical (delta 6)
all test were done with disable_autosave 1 and disable_autosave 0

Here are the tests I've done:

ALL TEST DONE ON FOLLOWING TRANSITIONS:
D1_CANALS_01 ->D1_CANALS_01A
D1_TOWN_01->D1_TOWN_01A

start new game->create save->go to map transition : PASSED
start new game->create save->go to map transition->load save->go to map transition : PASSED
start new game->create save->go to map transition->die by enemy->load save->go to map transition : PASSED
start new game->create save->go to map transition->die by 'kill' cmd->load save->go to map transition : PASSED

Load save->go to map transition->die by 'kill' cmd->load save->go to map transition : PASSED
Load save->go to map transition->die by enemy->load save->go to map transition : PASSED

//Tests have been run in both new session (restart game completely after death) and in ongoing session (no game restart).
//Tests have been made with quicksaves and manual saves each

It looks like a local issue, not directly tied to Standalone or SDK, more info would be helpful.


Be aware that SMOD may run out of memory after 3 or 4 map transitions due to lack of memory (32bit), so if you have like 2GB or ram that may be the cause...
Also for map transitions you can use changelevel command, it places you on a next level with your current equipment, and fires onMapTransition triggers.

Hmm, I just tried the Steammod version of Smod Redux Final and encountered exactly the same issue! Worked fine until I saved a game, loaded a game and walked into a map transition. (And Idid disable_autosave 1, so it's nothing to with autsoaves.)

Seems very weird if it's just me having this issue. Windows 10 PC, Nvidia graphics card, everything up to date... hmmm.

I was busy with IRL stuff for the past year.
Anyway, I might look in to that over the upcoming weekend, I've never been able to replicate it, but thanks to what you guys said, I might be to at least pinpoint it's cause

It sounds similar to but not quite the same as the savegame corruption issue you mention. In your case, trying to load a saved game was causing a crash. In my case, loading a save would work fine, but then the game would crash upon reaching the next level transition. Also it seemed like it happened on every level.

(I tried the first four maps of Route Kanal and the game would crash on transition if I had loaded a saved game at any point. I needed to use console commands to progress to the next level each time.)

And browsing this forum, I saw you mention in another thread that you'd like to get your hands on a copy of old original SMOD Remastered. I recently discovered I have it backed up on an old writable DVD, as well as a later SMOD mod that I was working on but never released.

For Valentine's Day I modified that unreleased mod a bit and made it so that when she got to d1_trainstation_06 (when you get the crowbar) it played some romantic music, said "Happy Valentine's Day, Angela!" and gave her the fists custom weapon, Gordon's Magical Stick, and the scissors. The latter two were renamed to Angela's Magical Stick and Angela's Chakram. (As in the lethal frisbee weapon used by Xena in Xena Warrior Princess.) Whenever she threw the scissors, or she punched or kicked someone, there was a one in three chance of hearing Xena's battle cry. Told my girlfriend to go nuts and destroy the patriarchy.

She was so happy she cried.

However we then discovered the crashing bug. (Which we got past using console commands.) I assumed I'd messed something up when I was hurriedly making my Valentine's Day mod. But I then tried both SMOD Redux and original SMOD that came with Standalone, and the same thing happened in both.

I've found if I load a saved game (whether automatically due to dying, or intentionally when I stop playing and then resume later) then when I reach the next map transition the game will crash, with the error message hl2.exe has stopped working.

This happens when running ANY Smod mod - whether it be Smod Redux, original SMOD40aq that came with SMOD standalone, or other SMOD mods that I have made.

The game works perfectly fine and can load new levels as long as I keep playing in one session and don't die. But if I die and load the last autosave or quicksave, then I can't load the next level via the transition at the end of the level, I have to put in a console command to load the next level and then use cheat codes to give myself the appropriate weapons.

Sounds like the savegame corruption issue with Standalone that I brought up way earlier in the thread:

So I think there's a save game corruption issue with SMOD Standalone.

In certain maps in the HL2 campaign (d1_canals_08 especially), any saves made in that map will crash the game when attempting to load them. This issue tends to happen when playing through several maps until reaching the offending one rather than just loading the map in console.

Strangely, loading a save from a earlier map and then making saves on the one where this issue happened seems to work fine. I've found no other ways to fix this issue. I suspect it has something to do with the EP2 .exe used in standalone, but can't confirm.

I never got a reply from Pepsifan about it, so I don't know if he's aware of the issue or if he can fix it, sadly.


Also, are you the same youreviltwin from back in the HIT (or whatever it was called, can't remember clearly) forum? :o

Hi people. I'm working on a little mod for GarrysMod, which allows you to remove headcrabs from HL2 zombies, and also randomize their models (in the next version). I want to ask if you don't mind that I include the zombie models from SMod Outbreak in my mod. It's still possible to download SMODO and install the models separately, but it would be more convenient if these cool models were included with the download by default.
