PC Issues
« on: September 08, 2015, 01:24:48 PM »
Okay guys, I hope you can solve my issue. Apparently my PC randomly shuts off when it's on idle recently (happened more than once in a span of a few days) and I'm worried that I may have to get it repaired. Does anyone might now what could be the problem? I recently installed the Metro: 2033 games around when it happened, but I don't think they be the cause of my issue. Luckily, SMMOD's latest code has been uploaded to github, so no data-loss for now.

Those are some pretty damn good specs you have there.

Does it happen after a set amount of time when you're not doing anything? Could be a motherboard "feature" that's sort of broke. I know that my motherboard, when put to hibernate, pretty much shuts down the pc, you have to press the power button to turn it back on. Your pc might not even shut down... but I suppose it would say "resuming Windows", so you would have noticed that.

Otherwise, random power-out problems are PSU related usually.

I'm no Computor Wizard, but are you using Windows 10?

Read.

It happens in a few minutes if I don't open up something to keep the computer from idle. I might try and go into the BIOS and change some settings to see if that fixes, but this never happened before, plus I hope not the PSU is related to this issue, I don't wanna go out and get replacement parts. ._. And yes, it's a good PC, built for gaming and server hosting at the same time (though seldomly).
._. I love coffee.

Try to check your power settings in the Control Panel. I have a similar issue, but my computer reboots instead, and for some reason doesn't detect the OS hdd anymore. Probably caused by a faulty HDD though...

I'd update my BIOS like Comrade said. But out of curiosity, have you changed your RAM lately? I've heard of some weird problems stemming from that.

Also, you could access your BIOS event log, maybe that could tell you more.

I changed my ram a few months ago. Also, how do I access my event log for my BIOS, I guess it's a menu item in the BIOS or is it a windows command?

It should be a menu item in your BIOS, should be something like Event Log or System Log. If you do decide to do this though, I'd check the hardware menu also. I remember getting weird issues similar to what you're describing after upgrading the RAM in my brothers computer. Your computer might not be reading it correctly.

the log you provided gives no info about crash.
now, could you specify something for me, is it:
Normal shutdown? (like, ie. "Logging out" and then "Shutting down")
it just goes black(suddenly turns off without logging out, and on next bootup gives you a prompt/info that "windows hasn't beed shutdown correcly...")?
or is it BSOD (if so,please provide a name of sys file that causes it)

Anyway: post or send a latest minidump file (you can use Dumpchk.exe to read them), it's gonna be a bit more helpfull

Just blacks out and says it didn't shut down correctly.

It's probably due to faulty RAM, try to remove some RAM cards (so you are left with 4 GB/8 GB), if the crash still occurs try to replace the installed RAM cards with the ones you  removed before. If it still happens then I guess you can eleminate the RAM as a problem.

Also, did you check your temps? It's not my #1 suspect but you should check them anyway.

Try to check the voltage of your PSU as well, as mentioned above it might be damaged and simply can't keep the power up.

HWMonitor is a pretty handy tool for these tasks.
