is smod broken??

Give us more details. "It crashes" doesn't help. Do you get any errors? What SMOD is it?

its smod 40a. the crash is: SteamStartup() failed: SteamStartup(0xf,0x0018E0E4) failed with error 1:The registry is in use by another process, timeout expired

Maybe hl2.exe is still running close that.

Also, Are you using the fixed .40a of SMOD?

It is a common bug, wich happens on ALL Steam games sometimes, restarting steam fixes it, but it mostly happens again some time, then just restart again to fix and so on.

If it's really that, try starting the game with the startup parameter -highjack
