Booted up SMOD, Dammit it's broken again!
« on: December 04, 2013, 02:55:45 PM »
So. After about a year of having an actual life, hanging out with my friends after school (Amazing. I actually found some friends.) and just shooting the shit I decided to sit down and pick up my old friend SMOD.

I found my old backup before the game broke, moved the files over to my sourcemods folder and restarted Steam and my computer, just to be safe. When Steam rebooted I immediately went to SMOD and clicked play.

The Valve intro sequence was so comforting, and the snow falls lightly outside creating a beautiful misty-snow Canadian wonderland of a town, the cold interior of my house reminded me of days just like this.

I was home... Only to find the eviction notice on the front door.

After the valve intro I get a quick flash of the 3d loading screen and it just dies. The screen flashes black and closes. No crash notice, nothing. Just closes like I quit the game.

Dammit! it's broken again!

Can any of you guys tell me how to fix this? I forget EVERYTHING about fixing SMOD.

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried out Pepsi's Steampipe fix?

I've actually been trying that for an hour or two now. Problem is it requires half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf and counter-strike source shared.gcf

Neither of which I have. I've check all of Steam with GCFScape, and it seems I have everything BUT those two files. I have a hell of a lot of GCF files in my Steam folders, but no counter-strike source shared.gcf or half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf

I have no clue what to do. The only thing I CAN do is ask someone for a copy of theirs. I've looked up downloads, I can't find any. I've looked up torrents, they have no seeds or peers.

I'm stuck in a hole that's shaped like a cone. No possible way out.

I did something to the gameinfo file by mistake, and now when the game boots it crashes again with this message.

It needs to convert the content. I'll tell you in a few minutes.

By the way, here's what my gameinfo file currently reads. Can you tell me what the values should ACTUALLY be? I know the top one was 215 at first.

"GameInfo"
{
   game       "HALF-LIFE 2 SMOD"
   title       "HALF-LIFE 2 SMOD"
   type      "singleplayer_only"
   "icon"       "smodicon"

   FileSystem
   {
      SteamAppId            220      // This will mount all the GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).
      ToolsAppId            240      // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.

      SearchPaths
      {
         Game            |gameinfo_path|.
         Game            hl2
      }
   }
}

I messed with it because I though I was supposed to be using that instead of the addcontents file. I fucked up and broke it. :P Can you tell me what your values are?

I can tell that SteamAppId is incorrect. If I'm right, it should be 215.
I think you should remove the SteamPipe fix and extract the HL2 VPK's and paste them into the SMOD folder. It *has* to work that way.

Ok, so I changed the first value to 215. Now one, what should the second value be (Can you check your files?) and two, how do I extract the HL2 VPKs?

The second value... I believe it's supposed to be 240, at least it is on my end and everything works fine.
To extract the VPK's, you're going to need the latest version of GCFScape.
I believe you have to extract the "models", "materials", "sound", "maps" and "scenes" folders.
But, if you don't want that, you can simply extract the maps. Just make sure you don't overwrite any maps that exist in the SMOD directory already. Everything else should be loaded by Source SDK Base 2006, since it has the HL2 materials, models, sounds etc. in the GCF format.

All of those issues you're having are simply making me chuckle. I've never had any sort of problem with SMOD that couldn't get solved with restarting Steam. That's it.

Replace contents of your gameinfo.txt with this:
Code: [Select]
"GameInfo"
{
   game       "HALF-LIFE 2 SMOD"
   title       "HALF-LIFE 2 SMOD"
   type      "singleplayer_only"
   "icon"       "smodicon"

   FileSystem
{
SteamAppId 215 // This will mount all the GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).
ToolsAppId 211 // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug, materials\editor, etc.

SearchPaths
{
Game |gameinfo_path|.
Game hl2
Game "|gameinfo_path|..\..\common\Half-Life 2\hl2"
}
}
}

also remove every game form addcontents.txt inside scripts folder, or copy-pase this:
Code: [Select]
"Additional contents list"
{
"Contents" {
// "LostCoast" {
// "path" "lostcoast"
// "id" "340"
// }
// "hl2" {
// "path" "hl2"
// "id" "220"
// }
// "HL2MP" {
// "path" "hl2mp"
// "id" "320"
// }
// "HL1:S" {
// "path" "hl1"
// "id" "280"
// }
// "CS:S" {
// "path" "cstrike"
// "id" "240"
// }
// "DOD:S" {
// "path" "dod"
// "id" "300"
// }
//        "Episode 1"{
//        "path" "episodic"
//          "id"   "380"
// }
}
}

after all that, run "Source SDK 2006" and let it convert to steam pipe, same with Half-Life2, restart steam and you're ready to go 8)
hope this helps
